Artist Statement

The following passage from Huayan (畫眼), a work by Dong Qichang (董其昌) of the Ming Dynasty, most closely reflects the artistic philosophy I seek to pursue:

“For a painter, to take the masters of the past as teachers is already to attain a high level. To go one step further, however, one must take nature itself as one’s teacher.”

Since ancient times, East Asian painting has placed great importance on the concept of 古 (gu, the past and the tradition), influenced by such philosophical principles as 溫故知新 (온고지신, “reviewing the past to discover the new”), 法古創新 (법고창신, “following the old while creating anew”), and 述而不作 (술이부작, “transmitting rather than merely creating”).

I regard 古 (gu) both as an object of study and as a central motif of my artistic practice. At the same time, I continually reflect on the two principles embodied in 師 (shi)—to take as a teacher, to learn from, and to emulate—and 不泥 (buni)—not to be bound by, or become stagnant within, what has been learned.

Through this process, I continually ask myself what I must remain vigilant against, and where a new beginning in artistic creation might emerge.

In contemporary painting, where artists are encouraged to pursue freedom in both subject matter and modes of expression, I wish to reaffirm the enduring legitimacy and vitality of 古, the tradition of the past.

Having completed my studies in China, I am now based in Korea, where I continue to paint through close observation of 古畫 (gohwa, paintings of the past) and the immediacy of 寫生 (sasaeng, direct observation and sketching from life).
