이번 무우수갤러리에서 진행되는 흔들리지 않는 지혜 : 금강경을 설하다 전시는 불교 수행과 불교미술 연구가 긴밀히 어우러진 뜻깊은 결실입니다. 금강경은 대승불교의 핵심 경전으로, 집착을 내려놓고 공空의 지혜를 깨닫게 하는 가르침을 담고 있습니다. 오랜 세월 수행자와 학인들에게 길잡이가 되어 온 이 경전을, 연구와 수행의 과정을 거쳐 회화로 형상화한 작업은 불교미술의 또 하나의 가치를 보여주는 전시라 하겠습니다.

나의 제자인 전시자는 논문에서 『금강반야바라밀경 변상』을 깊이 탐구하였고, 그 학문적 연구를 바탕으 로 삶 속에서 금강경을 되새기며 이를 그림으로 표현하는 길을 걸어왔습니다. 이는 불교미술이 단순한 조형적 아름다움에 머무르지 않고, 수행의 길과 학문적 탐구가 하나로 만날 수 있음을 몸소 보여준 모습이라 여깁니다.

금강경에서는 ‘형상 있는 보시보다 진리를 전하는 마음이 더 큰 공덕이다’라고 강조하고 있습니다. 참된 공 덕은 행위의 크기가 아니라 마음의 깊이에서 완성된다는 뜻입니다. 이번 전시는 이런 부처님의 가르침을 실천하는 자리로, 그림을 통해 금강경의 지혜를 나누고자 하는 진실한 마음이 담겨 있습니다. 불교미술을 통해 현대 사회 속에서 마음의 안식과 지혜를 전하고자 묵묵히 정진해 온 사랑하는 제자 장혜 경의 전시를 진심으로 축하하며, 이번 전시가 불교미술의 가치를 알리고 동시에 오늘을 살아가는 현대인 들에게 잠시나마 마음의 평안을 얻을 수 있는 전시가 되기를 서원합니다.

전시를 펼치며 이번 전시는 흔들리지 않는 지혜 : 금강경을 설하다 라는 이름으로 마련되었습니다. 금강경은 제가 불교 수행을 시작하며 처음 만난 경전이자 가장 사랑하는 부처님 말씀입니다. 석사 논문으로 깊이 탐구했던 『금강반야바라밀경 변상의 연구』를 바탕으로, 삶 속에서 소중한 금강경을 되새기며, 그 사상을 그림으로 표현하는 과정을 이어왔습니다. 그림을 그리는 일은 단순한 창작이 아니라 저에게는 수행의 또 다른 길이었습니다. 붓을 들고 색을 얹는 매 순간이 집착을 내려놓고 마음을 비추는 수행이었고, 그 과정에서 금강경의 가르 침은 더욱 선명하게 다가왔습니다. 부처님께서는 금강경에서 수많은 금은보화보다 사구게 하나를 전하는 공덕이 더 크다고 설하셨습니다. 저 역시 그 말씀처럼, 그림을 통해 금강경의 뜻을 조금이나마 나누고자 합니다. 제 표현이 부족할지라도, 이 그림들을 통해 금강경의 깊은 사상이 조금 더 친숙하게 다가가길 바라며, 금강경의 가르침을 나누는 작은 인연이 되기를 바랍니다. 관람객 여러분께서 이 전시 속에서 금강처럼 단단하고 흔들리지 않는 지혜를 지닌 자신만의 깨달음과 사유를 이어가시기를 기원합니다.

Foreword

The exhibition Unshakable Wisdom: Expounding the Diamond Sutra, presented at Moowoosoo Gallery, is a meaningful culmination of Buddhist practice and the study of Buddhist art. The Diamond Sutra, one of the central scriptures of Mahāyāna Buddhism, teaches the wisdom of emptiness (śūnyatā) by encouraging us to let go of attachment. For centuries, it has served as a spiritual guide for both practitioners and scholars. This exhibition presents a unique artistic interpretation of the sutra, transforming the insights gained through both scholarly research and spiritual practice into paintings that reveal another profound dimension of Buddhist art.

The exhibiting artist, my student, conducted an in-depth academic study of the Illustrated Diamond Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra in her master's thesis. Building upon this research, she has continued to contemplate the teachings of the Diamond Sutra in her daily life and express its wisdom through painting. Her work demonstrates that Buddhist art extends beyond aesthetic beauty, becoming a place where artistic creation, scholarly inquiry, and spiritual cultivation converge.

The Diamond Sutra teaches that sharing the Dharma surpasses even material generosity in merit. True virtue is measured not by the magnitude of one's actions, but by the sincerity and depth of one's heart. This exhibition embodies that teaching, conveying the artist's heartfelt wish to share the wisdom of the Diamond Sutra through her paintings.

I sincerely congratulate my beloved student, Jihyu Jang Hye-kyung, who has devoted herself to communicating peace of mind and wisdom through Buddhist art in the contemporary world. I hope this exhibition will not only deepen appreciation for the value of Buddhist art but also offer today's viewers a moment of quiet reflection and inner peace.

Artist's Note

This exhibition, Unshakable Wisdom: Expounding the Diamond Sutra, is dedicated to the scripture that first accompanied me on my path of Buddhist practice and has remained the teaching I cherish most.

Drawing upon my master's thesis, A Study of the Illustrated Diamond Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra, I have continued to reflect upon the Diamond Sutra in my daily life and express its philosophy through painting.

For me, painting is not merely an act of artistic creation—it is another form of spiritual practice. Every brushstroke and every layer of color has become an opportunity to let go of attachment and contemplate the mind. Through this process, the teachings of the Diamond Sutra have become ever more vivid and deeply rooted within me.

In the Diamond Sutra, the Buddha teaches that sharing even a single verse of the Dharma generates greater merit than offering immeasurable treasures of gold and jewels. Inspired by this teaching, I hope to share, however humbly, a glimpse of the sutra's wisdom through these paintings.

Although my artistic expression may be limited, I sincerely hope these works will make the profound philosophy of the Diamond Sutra more approachable and become a small but meaningful connection through which its teachings may be shared.

May each visitor discover, through this exhibition, a moment of personal contemplation and awakening, cultivating a wisdom as steadfast and unwavering as a diamond.
