작가노트

필묵筆墨이란 화두에 묻혀 사는 나는 환갑이라는 일주 갑을 지난 두 살배기이다.

두 살배기라는 단어에 유독 정감이 간다.

이전의 두 살배기 때는 동네 사람들의 사랑을 독차지하고 있었던, ‘인생에 가장 화려했던 시기?’가 아닌가 하는 생각이 든다. ‘원하면 안 되는 것이 없었던 시절’이다. 그래도 고을에선 머슴을 데리고 있는 집안의 귀한 동자였으니 말이다.

지금의 두 살배기 나는 세상의 모든 것에 영양가 없이 관여하고 고민과 더불어 안 되는 것까지 욕심을 부리는... 그야말로 노친네가 되어가고 있다. 옛날 같으면 덤으로 살아야 할 것 같은 나이인지라 언감생심 조마조마하기도 한 전쟁터 같으니 말이다. 두 살배기 노친네는 머릿속은 어른인데 사실 요즘의 어른들 앞에선 그저 두 살배기가 아닐까 한다. 그래도 기쁜 일이 없는 것은 아니다.

월요일이면 대략 본 초간을 공부하는 시간, 호리지차毫釐之差의 간극은 옛사람의 심중을 읽을 수 있다. 유·무식이 아니다. 한문만으로 이해하는 것과는 다른 그래도 붓을 가까이 한 오랜 경험의 나에겐 기쁨이 따로 있다. 순식간에 오후가 되어 서실이면 일생의 만년 손님! 서예를 같이 공부하는 분들과 이러쿵저러쿵하는 시간이다. 마치는 시간이 밤 아홉시가 넘지만 그 수는 헤아릴 수가 없다. 사람이 많아서가 아니다. 출석의 자유를 만끽하는 요즘의 시대를 말한다.

화요일이면 근 이십 년 가까이 가장 바쁘고 긴장의 끈이 살아있는 시간, 오전의 자오 전각 반의 칼잽이 시간 ‘같은 문자 다른 표현’에 호감을 가지는 시간이다. 이 짧은 두 시간 역시 인생사가 다 들어있다.

학습을 마치고 다음 장소까지 한 시간의 거리, 집사람이 준비한 음식으로 자동차 안에서 한강을 바라보며 오찬을 나눈다. 의미있는 짜투리의 귀한 시간이 아닐 수 없다.

관악의 스무 살을 갓 넘긴 대학생 친구들을 만나야 되니 기대와 더불어 마음의 무거움 또한 상당하다. 옛것을 새것에 호감 있게 접목시켜야 하는 숙제를 안고 있기 때문이다.

예전에는 볼펜이라도 가교가 되었으나 지금은 그것마저도 사라지고, 스마트폰의 세대와 붓을 가까이하게 하려니... 이쯤 되면 가히 스스로를 위로 해야 할 시점이다.

그냥 내가 아는 것만 가르치는 것만이야 얼마나 쉬울까. 그러나 필묵이라는 정서와 깊이가 얼마나 소중한 것임을 알기에 나의 숙제가 숙제로 끝나지 않는다. 학생들에게 무언의 기도를 한다.

한 시에서 다섯 시까지의 네 시간은 짧지 않은데 돌아보면 한 것이 없는 듯하다.

학교의 저녁 시간인 한 시간 삼 십여 분은 에너지 보충의 시간, 그나마 마음의 여유가 생긴다. 교수님과 교직원 선생님들은 바쁜 일정 후의 여가 시간이라 이심전심과 함께하기에 ‘조금 먼저 붓을 잡았다’는 여력으로 혼자 떠들어 댄다. 공감해 주신다. 요즘은 인기가 괜찮은 듯 25분의 수강자리가 채워지는데 신입을 많이 받을 수 없는 형편으로 진행된다. 18년을 넘기며 16권의 전시도록 『관악사 문자동행전』이 매년 이어지고 있음은 그야말로 나에겐 무가지보無價之寶가 되었다. 퇴근의 시간 전철을 타기 전 매점에 들러 우유 하나 사서 마시는 습관이 생겼다. 열시 반이나 열 한 시면 집에 도착 하루의 일과를 마친다.

수요일...

한세대학교 교양과목 『문자디자인과 전각』,『서예와 캘리그라피』,『사군자이론과 실습』을 맡아 십 오년을 보냈다. 지난 학기를 마지막으로 불특정 다 수의 학생들과 무대면 고별하고는 마포구 상수동에 위치한 홍익대 교정의 학생들과 함께한다. 서예와 전각이다. 이곳은 특징이 중국 학생이 많다. 학생들이 진지하다. 이번 학기는 서예로 결과물이 기대된다. 오전 오후의 일정을 마치고 서실에 직행 다섯 시면 나의 시간과 개인전 준비에 열심인 분과 정년 후의 붓 끝에 심취하게 된, 두 분과의 시간이다. 10시경 마치는 것이 귀가의 시간이다.

목요일의 아침,

2학기에 천안의 단국대에 출강을 하게되면 이른 아침 6시경 출발해야 하지만 1학기엔 자유의 몸이다.

자유의 시간과 함께하는 벗들이 있어 한가한 시간이 없어 감사하다. 밤 여덟 시에 줌으로 하는 『燈下論心』 은 나와 같이 글씨 공부를 하는 백년손님들과 함께 논어를 읽고 해석하며 공락共樂하는 시간이다. 하나를 알고 이는 마음, 둘 알고 이는 마음이 부딪히며 하나하나 성숙해 가고 있다. 춘추시대의 현인인 거백옥蘧伯玉의 일화에 “五十而知四十九年之非” “나이 50이 되어서야 그 이전 49년 동안의 세월이 잘못되었구나!” 했다는 그 깨달음과 성숙의 그릇은 각자의 몫이다.

금요일이이라!

역시나 일 학기면 여유가 있다. 이렇게 시간이 좋은 것이야? 새삼 준비하는 것이 있다. 저녁 7시에 시작하는 초서 강독의 시간, 필획을 분석하는 시간이다. 한시漢詩 한 수 씩 초서의 변화를 깨닫는 시간이다. 한자를 익히며 초서의 이해를 동시에... 더듬어 같이 공부하는 시간, 가르치면서 배우고 깨달으니 세상에 이 귀한 맞이 또 있을까 두 시간이 넘게 이야기할 것, 넘치니 목이 아파도 즐거운 여운이 남는다. 스무 살 남 짓의 눈동자가 둘이요 에너지 넘치는 사업가의 기운, 필력이 목에 차 있어 곧 굉연宏然히 터지길 예비하는 초대작가가 있으니 팽팽한 시간이다. 필묵筆墨은 운필의 여유로움으로 이치를 알아야 즐길 수 있다. 바로 격물치지格物致知가 아닐까... 열시 경 마치게 되니 퇴근이다.

토요일,

사람들은 대부분 여가를 가지고 즐거운 여행을 생각하는 반 휴일, 나는 주말에 만나는 벗들이 있어 출근으로 여행을 대체한다. 십 년 이십 년의 인연因緣이 더 귀함을 지나간 세월에서 이들을 보며 알 것 같다. 이들과 한 번씩 간식으로 하는 옛날 통닭과 맥주의 맛은 그 주인이 십 년이 넘게 오랫동안 유지하는 이유를 알게 한다. 맛나는 토요일을 여느 사람과 같이 했다면 필묵의 맛을 알지 못했을 것이기에, 휴일 여행을 반납한것이 가히 손해는 아닌 듯하다.

드디어 일요일 나만의 시간이다.

작품을 해야 한다. 어- 날이 지났네! 아직 여유가 있구먼! 재주 없음이 여기서 드러난다. 작품 하나에 목을 매듯 하다가 끝내 맘에 들지 못하고 마친다. 어릴 적 많이도 놀았던 과오를 이제야 조금씩 메우고 있다. 공부가 좋아진 것이다. 공부하는 것이 가장 좋다는 것이 몸에 와 닿는다. “두 살배기가 벌써 공부를 좋아한다”고 말하고 싶다. 유교 경전인 《예기禮記》의 〈학기學記〉편에 나오는 學然後知不足 학연후지부족 이라. 이 말은 나에게 맞는 말이다.

끝으로 오늘의 붓을 깨우치고 학學하게 이끌어 주신 초민 선생님과 이 자리를 초대해 주신 무우수갤러리 관장님께 깊이 감사드린다. 그리고 함께하는 동학들께도 무한한 감사를 드린다.

Artist’s Reflection

I have lived immersed in the lifelong inquiry of brush and ink (筆墨). Having completed one full cycle of sixty years, I now call myself a “two-year-old” once again.

There is a particular affection I feel toward this phrase, “two-year-old.” The first time I was two, perhaps it was the most splendid period of my life—an age when I was surrounded by the love of those around me and believed nothing was beyond my reach. Born into a family that was considered privileged in my hometown, I was a cherished child.

Yet the two-year-old that I am today is quite different. I concern myself with countless matters of the world, worry over what I cannot achieve, and continue to desire even that which may be beyond my reach. Thus, I find myself becoming an old man who, despite his age, remains a child in front of the endless wisdom of life. Still, there is much joy to be found in this new beginning.

Each week is filled with the quiet discipline of learning and practice. Through the study of ancient texts and the subtle differences hidden within a single stroke, I seek not merely intellectual understanding, but a deeper communion with the spirit of the masters who came before me. My years spent holding the brush have given me a different way of reading their hearts.

My days are spent among fellow practitioners of calligraphy, students, and younger generations who encounter the world of brush and ink for the first time. Through seal engraving, calligraphy, and the study of classical writings, I continue to ask how ancient traditions may be expressed in a language that resonates with contemporary life.

Teaching young students in particular has become both my greatest challenge and my deepest responsibility. In an age where even the pen has disappeared and the smartphone has become the dominant tool of expression, guiding younger generations toward the world of the brush requires patience and constant reflection. Yet I cannot simply pass on techniques; I wish to share the emotion, depth, and philosophy embedded within brush and ink. This silent wish remains my ongoing prayer for my students.

Over many years of teaching at universities and in private studios, I have encountered countless students and companions on this path. The annual exhibitions and the records of our shared journeys have become treasures beyond value in my life. These relationships, built through decades of devotion, are among the most precious gifts that brush and ink have given me.

The days continue with discussions of the Confucian classics, the reading of the Analects, the study of cursive script, and the exploration of the principles hidden within every brushstroke. Through learning with others, I am constantly reminded of the ancient wisdom that true maturity comes from recognizing the limits of one’s own knowledge.

While many people spend their weekends in leisure and travel, I find my journeys in the companionship of those who share the same devotion to brush and ink. The friendships cultivated over ten, twenty years have become more meaningful than any distant destination.

At last, Sunday arrives—the day reserved solely for my own work. I stand before a blank surface and devote myself to a single piece, often realizing how much more there is still to learn. Only now do I truly understand the joy of study. The words from the Book of Rites, “One learns and only then realizes one’s own inadequacy,” have become a lifelong lesson for me.

Finally, I offer my deepest gratitude to my teacher, Chomin, who awakened my understanding of the brush and guided me on the path of learning, to the director of Moowoosoo Gallery for offering me this meaningful opportunity, and to all my fellow companions who continue this journey alongside me.
