푸르른 날의 아린 맛은

누구를 거부함이 아니었다

속살을 채우려 스스로를 걸어 잠근

치열한 성벽이었다.

뙤약볕에 몸을 태우고

서릿발에 뼈를 깎으며

안으로 안으로 삭여온

그 지독한 떫음이 가시고 나서야

비로소 붉게 무른다

상처가 꿀이 되는 홍시가 된다

지금 우리는 떫은 것이 아니라

달콤해 질 준비를 하는 중이다.

작가 노트

수묵화에 심취한 지 8년, 떫은 감의 맛이 가시고 단맛이 차오르듯 수묵의 농담과 번짐을 변주하며 삶의 고통과 환희를 시각화하는 데 매진해 왔다. 이 과정에서 문인화로 대변되는 전통의 미학을 현대적 가치로 치환하고, ‘시서화(詩書畵) 일체’라는 거대한 담론의 맥을 잇고자 노력했다.

수묵이 지닌 강렬한 갈필의 힘과 부드러운 발묵의 조화가 어떻게 시대적 메시지를 담아낼 수 있는지 고민했다. 예컨대 갯벌을 소재로 한 작업에서 묵묵히 제자리를 지키는 일꾼들과 정박한 배들의 모습은, 흔들리지 않는 삶의 뿌리와 인식에 대한 나의 철학적 응답이다.

수묵추상 또한 그러한 노력의 일환이다. 보이지 않는 인간관계의 메커니즘, 즉 한지 위에 먹물처럼 스며들면서도 때로는 날카로운 경계감을 빚는 복잡다단한 상호성을 ‘적층’과 ‘마멸’이라는 수행의 과정을 통해 접근하려 했다. 구상적 실체를 수묵의 번짐 속에 가두어 ‘추상’이라는 침묵의 언어를 끄집어내려 했다.

나의 그림에서 여백은 무한한 가능성이 숨쉬는 곳이다. 갯벌의 광활함이나 산수의 깊이감 그리고 묘사 대상의 단순화는 필연적으로 비움을 통해 완성된다, 나는 이 여백을 관객 사유의 창에 띄워 작품의 완성을 기대한다.

법고창신(法古創新)의 정신을 바탕으로 앞으로도 수묵이라는 매체를 통해 동시대적 호흡을 이어갈 것이다. 때로는 날카로운 긴장으로, 때로는 질박한 온기로 끊임없이 수묵의 지평을 넓혀가는 구도자적 자세로 이 길을 걷고자 한다.

Artist Statement

For the past eight years immersed in ink painting, I have devoted myself to visualizing the suffering and joy of life through the varied tones, shades, and spontaneous diffusion of ink—much like the astringency of an unripe persimmon gradually fades to reveal its hidden sweetness. Throughout this journey, I have sought to reinterpret the aesthetics of traditional literati painting within a contemporary context and to continue the enduring spirit of the unity of poetry, calligraphy, and painting.

I have contemplated how the dynamic tension between the expressive force of dry brushwork and the gentle fluidity of wet ink can embody the messages of our time. In my works depicting tidal flats, for instance, the quiet laborers steadfastly tending their places and the boats resting in stillness become my philosophical reflection on the roots of life and the resilience of human existence.

My ink abstraction is also an extension of this pursuit. I attempt to explore the invisible mechanisms of human relationships—the complex interactions that permeate like ink seeping into hanji paper, yet at times create sharp boundaries—through the meditative processes of layering and erosion. By allowing figurative forms to dissolve within the diffusion of ink, I seek to draw forth the silent language of abstraction.

In my paintings, empty space is a realm where infinite possibilities breathe. The vastness of tidal flats, the depth of landscapes, and the simplification of represented forms are ultimately fulfilled through the act of emptiness. I leave these spaces as an open field for the viewer’s contemplation, anticipating the completion of the work through their own perception and reflection.

Grounded in the spirit of learning from tradition while creating anew, I will continue to engage with the contemporary world through the medium of ink. At times with sharp tension, at others with humble warmth, I walk this path as a devoted seeker, continually expanding the horizons of ink painting.
